The Big Ten Seniors

From the early 1900s to the 1980s, Washington State University recognized the best five men and five women seniors. These students were called "The Big Five Men" and "The Big Five Women." The Student Alumni Connection is continuing this tradition with "The Big Ten Seniors" award program. The most qualified five men and five women, each representing a specific aspect of the college experience, will be chosen. These categories are:
Academics
Athletics
Campus Involvement
Community Service
Visual/Performing Arts
Winners will demonstrate excellence in one of these categories. Please see individual award descriptions for selection criteria. Student Alumni Connection will select finalist for each category. A committee of WSU faculty and staff will select the recipient of each award. Nominees must be undergraduates graduating during the 2007 calendar year.
Nominations must be received by 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 23, 2008 by either mail, fax or online (see link below).
Winners will be announced at the Senior Barbeque on May 1 at the Lewis Alumni Centre. All students nominated will be invited to attend. All winners will receive a certificate, a medallion, recognition, and a press release to their hometown newspaper as well as that honor of being named a Big Ten Senior.

NOMINATION REQUIREMENTS FOR THE BIG TEN SENIORS AWARD
EACH NOMINATION MUST INCLUDE:

2. Letter of Nomination / Personal Essay
A senior may be nominated by a peer, faculty, staff or self nomination by a letter of nomination or personal essay. The letter of nomination or personal essay must be tailored to a specific category (academics, athletics, campus involvement, community service, or visual/performing arts). The requirements for each category are as follows:
ACADEMICS
Describe how the senior demonstrated superior excellence in academics through effort in and out of the classroom throughout his/her time at WSU. In addition, describe how the knowledge and skills gained will be utilized in a future career/life pursuit. Be sure to mention any academic awards or recognition, enrollment in the Honors College, involvement in departmental clubs and honorary/professional societies, research, papers written, and other pertinent information. In addition, include a résumé detailing all involvement in the other four categories: athletics, campus involvement, community service, and visual/performing arts. Please feel free to include any other relevant materials, such as letters of recommendation.
ATHLETICS
Nominees for this category may include varsity, intramural, professional, outdoor, or disabled athletes. Describe how the senior demonstrated superior excellence in athletics throughout his/her time at WSU. Be sure to mention athletic achievements, statistics, athletic awards and recognition, and team leadership positions relevant to the athletics category. In addition, describe the senior's future goals and include a résumé detailing all involvement in the other four categories: academics, campus involvement, community service, and visual/performing arts. Please feel free to include any other relevant materials, such as letters of recommendation.
CAMPUS INVOLVEMENT
Nominees for this category may include seniors who have been involved in ASWSU, registered student organizations, university committees, hall government, fraternities, and/or sororities. Describe how the senior demonstrated superior excellence in campus involvement throughout his/her time at WSU. Be sure to mention all activities participated in, positions held, awards and recognition, and impact on campus. In addition, describe the senior's future goals and include a résumé detailing all involvement in the other four categories: academics, athletics, community service, and visual/performing arts. Please feel free to include any other relevant materials, such as letters of recommendation.
COMMUNITY SERVICE
Nominees for this category may include seniors who have participated in outreach to children, senior citizens, the impoverished, women's safety, the environment, etc. Describe how the senior demonstrated excellence in community service throughout his/her time at WSU. Be sure to mention all projects participated in, leadership roles, number of hours served, and the impact on the target audience(s). In addition, describe the senior's future goals and include a résumé detailing all involvement in the other four categories: academics, athletics, campus involvement, and visual/performing arts. Please feel free to include any other relevant materials, such as letters of recommendation.
VISUAL/PERFORMING ARTS
Nominees for this category may include painters, sculptors, graphic artists, singers, musicians, composers, actors/actresses, directors, etc. Describe how the senior demonstrated excellence in visual/performing arts throughout his/her time at WSU. Be sure to include to mention all works created or performed, and awards and recognition. In addition, describe the senior's future goals and include a résumé detailing all involvement in the other four categories: academics, athletics, campus involvement, community service, and visual/performing arts. Please feel free to include reproductions of visual/performing art works and any other relevant materials, such as letters of recommendation.
